What Does God Do?

When’s the last time you asked yourself that question? Does God DO anything? Isn’t this the prophetic seventh day and He is resting? Does God need to rest? Come on He’s God and so there really isn’t any effort here. Maybe we should begin with the definition of God- maybe not! And one more opening question. Since God isn’t limited or hindered by time or space is the word or concept of “doing” really applicable here? Getting past all the fun questions, I do believe that the lead line question is one worth exploring and important to our theological musings. So, here we go.

What function does God serve?

Peter F. Hamilton (1960- ), who is a British science fiction author, says that “God knows the whole content of the possible, the whole continuum of possibilities”, so what’s there to do?

Theistic fundamentalists speak of a God who “hangs out” somewhere “out there” in the vast universe, beyond our telescopes, waiting for an appropriate prayer so He can come visit in a nano-second, and come to our aid. That’s got to get old don’t you think? And what are those authentic or valid prayers that gets His attention anyway?

I simply don’t believe the world is a “settled affair“, not static, but that God is here in our midst working with us on a constant basis. He doesn’t just show up in emergencies, nor is He “out there” listening in. He is within!

God has PLANS! Can we start there? :-)

God has a plan for everyone and everything. As the poet has said, “The stars resonate and vibrate with every flower that is picked on earth.” Along with God’s plans comes His involvement. There are days when I feel He’s right at my side speaking and directing. Most often He is whispering. That’s probably why we don’t know He’s here. With all the music, TV, videos, and digital stimulates than we produce on an hourly basis, it’s hard for the “still small voice” to be heard.

God is our daily stimulant and the lure which is dangled before those who can discern the Spirit. Bottom line, God is AT WORK in all of our LIVES. As Alfred North Whitehead, OM (1861-1947), an English-born mathematician who became a philosopher put it, “God is always grasping for us- prehensive: not merely intellectual comprehensive, not only imaginative apprehensive, but also that deep feeling influence who profoundly affects and modifies the recipient.” That would be you and I.

Maybe the better question would be is there anything that God does NOT do?

When you realize that God is dynamic and not static in the world, and in your life- life changes!

You ready for a change? :-)

  • What is your deal with quoting Englishmen today? My answer to the title even before reading is that he’s the glue that holds it all together.

  • We “Americans” have only been around for a couple hundred years, and then that’s (England) where we came from anyway. :-)

  • Knowing God never changes and that He is omnipresent it’s me that needs to be transformed. I need to have more knowledge and understanding than this finite being is that I am. Would that school was more important to me way back then and even more than that knowing God in the way I’m knowing and understanding Him now. Thanks for leading me and growing me UP! I’ll always need MORE!

  • As long as I live there will be more because……… Deus semper major (a quote you’ll find in Wednesday’s commentary- tomorrow). :-)

  • Well said-pastor Ernie…although my ancestry is not traced back to England but a rather different region of Europe.
