Who Can Be Trusted?

Where are the true spiritual leaders today? Who can we trust?

It’s been slow but sure. The erosion of faith in anything of value in America has been unrelenting. Most historians would say that it all began in 1963. Vatican II had opened in 1962 with great hope and promise but in the midst of the meetings, Pope John XXIII died and with his death the great dreams of so many Catholics died as well.

In an amazing double whammy, 19 days after the death of the Pope, John F. Kennedy, who had promised us a “New Frontier” was assassinated. On a larger scale we then saw America’s defeat in Viet Nam, and America became a land of young men and women who started rebelling against any and all authorities. Within a decade we also saw how untrustworthy even the highest office in the land could be as Richard Milhous Nixon is forced to resign as president of our once proud nation.

Who could be trusted? Who can be trusted?

We have become a nation of individuals. We’ve lost our spiritual and corporate soul. When real spiritual values are lost at the top, they are hard to be found anywhere. When there are no models, no one to follow, each person falls back into whatever is best for them regardless of what’s best for anyone else.

Hans Kung said, “If it is to our advantage and our personal happiness, should we not just as well lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery and murder; indeed, why should we be humane or even fair? Perhaps what is good is simply whatever is to my advantage, to the advantage of my group, party, class, race, or even to the advantage of my business, or trade union.”

We have a crisis of values!

We have a void of leaders with courage to do right things!

We desperately need leaders who are being led by God! Where are they?”
