Why Are We Doing This?

Have you ever sat in a swing on a cool fall day, rocking back and forth, and let your mind wander? Sure. But then what? What does one do after a crazy thought, a difficult question, or a spiritual challenge hits you smack dab in the face? Most often, we simply move on: which means we’re really not moving on, but holding pat. I simply can’t any longer. Whatever this journey produces or wherever it leads, let’s do this thing.

Why do we do what we do? Maybe the better question is why aren’t we doing what we’re not? You know the George Bernard Shaw “Some see things there are and say why: while other see things that never have been and say why not”? Or maybe it’s more like Schopenhaur said, “Important indeas are first ridiculed, then attacked, and finally taken for granted.” You been there? I surely have.

Asking too many questions though can get you killed. Serious!

Socrates (470-399BCE) asked too many questions, too many serious questions that challenged the traditions of the day. He was killed as a result and the message was sent to all Athenians. Question established customs and you will face the same fate. Or you could escape with your life and just be excommunicated as Spinoza was.

Have I given you enough answers so far?

Do you remember what the titled question was? Why are we doing this? And, what is the “this“? It’s whatever you find yourself doing over and over again. What habits you’ve fallen into. And particularly, I am talking about our religious habits. We keep doing them because to question is to means you don’t have faith, or that you don’t want to lose friends. So, you keep on keeping on- pretending life as you’re living it is really not all that bad. But, since Jesus was serious enough about us to give His life for use, don’tcha think we ought to maybe ask a few questions?

I am! How about you?
